Just got off of the horn with Coach Clay.

He will be dropping off our racing canoes at the Kailua Beach Park tomorrow morning at 6:00am, to avoid the mad crush of canoe trailers which will follow shortly thereafter. Coach Clay requests that at least 10 Levites help unload our racers at that time.

Rigging will begin in earnest at 8:00am.

• There is going to be some great paddling action on tap this Sunday in Kailua (commence theme song from "Rocky" movie now), and click on above link for race info.

• You'll not want to miss the "Le Mans" start for both the wahine and kane races. For us cheerleaders left on the beach, it is just so much fun to caravan from Kailua through Waimanalo, and then down the home stretch on the East Side, stopping along the way to grab a cup of joe from Starbucks (actually, I like the new iced coffee from McDonald's too - hazelnut - yummy), and see our paddling crews jockeying for the finish line amongst the scores of other crews entered in the race.

• Let us all pray for the safety and welfare of each and every Boat Driver, Deckhand, Boat Helper, and Paddler competing in this weekend's races.

• A special thank you to Lanikai Canoe Club for always putting together this terrific event every year befitting of the race's namesake.

"New Hope For A Broken Paddle"

It takes a very special person to breathe life into something most would consider rubbish.

While waiting for our canoes to return home from Diamond Head this past Saturday, I spotted an unusually short paddle amongst the other practice paddles which were all proudly propped up against the cement picnic table, and all ready for action.

This stubby looking paddle seemed to beckon, "Come on guys, I'm short, but I can still get the job done, pick me! You'll see!"

I didn't think I had been in the sun too long, although I must admit I hadn't been wearing a cap which can't be good.

Just as I began to turn away, a heaven sent voice out of nowhere land said "Isn't that just incredible?"

I snapped back toward the paddle, and luckily, the voice belonged to paddler Dave who had picked the quirky looking paddle up, and off of the sand as if it were a masterpiece.

Dave said that paddler Jimmy had found the paddle in the rubbish can after last week's practice, it's function rendered useless as part of the blade had broken off. Dave said that it was akin to GOD's love for us, how HE takes the brokenhearted out of the garbage pit of despair and loneliness, to render people new and whole again.

As luck would have it, Jimmy was within earshot, and Dave called him over to join in on our impromptu conversation. A very tall Jimmy said, "The kids and the not so tall love it, they can really get a good grip!"

Thank you Jimmy, you are a very special man.

Thank you GOD, for fixing my earthly broken paddle, day in, and day out.

Did I?

• Did I look for the good, and not just the bad in people today?
• Did I pray and fervently thank GOD for all that he has, is, and will do for my ohana, friends, and I, yesterday, today, and tomorrow?
• Did I look for an opportunity and privilege to be kind to everyone I met today?
• Did I take the time to really get to know at least one person a little better today?
• Did I take the time to earnestly listen to a sister or brother in need of someone to make their world a little less lonely to live in today?
• Did I ask GOD to help me make peace within myself in life's journey today?
• Did I pass up a chance to tell somebody how special they are?
• Did I take a moment during an all too brief minute's rest in the middle of practice, to not only take a swig of water from my plastic bottle, and wipe away the stinging sweat from my eyes, but to look up at the sky in utter awe and amazement that here I am sitting in a bobbing canoe, floating on the Pacific Ocean, under a balmy baby blue canopy, in a place GOD made and called Hawai'i! Whoa.

My heart smiles when I can answer "Yes" to any one of these questions, before the cashier bids me farewell, and hands me my white plastic bags full of life's stuffs.

I know that anything is possible through our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

We are HIS living proof.

On Saturday, August 11th, we are in need of assistance to clean the Farrington High School Auditorium after an interior upgrade.

• What will the time involvement be? 8am to 11am
• What will we be doing? The interior of the auditorium will be painted this upcoming week. So, we will be the team that goes in to make it shine, and bring a sense of life and transformation to the auditorium.
• What supplies should I bring? Laughter, wonderful heart, and delightful smile.... hot malassadas..... NH & Spirit of Aloha will provide all the required supplies.
• Are kids welcome? YES
• I can only help out for 2 hours, should I still come? Please.

Best wishes to those who are continuing on to the long distance season. Stay hydrated (it's been hot and humid this summer), seek shade when ever and where ever possible, slather on that sun screen (not just once), stretch (before and after practices and races), remain alert and stay safe always (buddy system).

For our paddlers who are hospitalized, on the mend, weathering a lifestorm, or fighting off a flu bug, our thoughts and prayers are with you 24/7, call on us if you are in need of prayer, or just a friendly chum to rap with.

We are Ohana both on and off of the water, through good times, and not so good times.

I'll never forget my first regatta season, it was incredible! I can't wait to race in my first long distance "water-change" race. I'm so excited, I could just pop!

Dear Ted,

Please don't pop, I want you to make crew, and that's the kind of enthusiasm long distance requires. It's too bad you couldn't make the meeting. If you think you're fired up now, Coach Blane told the large group of paddlers who gathered at the L.E.A.D. Center today, that we are gearing up for one doozy of a long distance season encompassing nine races from now until October. Chicken skin.

• Long distance practice begins on Monday, July 30th (Wahine), Tuesday, July 31st (Kane).
• An excellent presentation was given by Coach Blane, Coach Charlie, and Kehau. An informational packet was distributed which I will make available to you on-line by tomorrow.
• A "NHCC 2007 LD Season ESTIMATED Race Fees" flyer was also distributed (I'll post this too).
• Invite and welcome new faces as some canoe clubs do not have long distance paddling programs.

Pretty soon, you going see what the color indigo really looks like.

It's a gift from GOD, to all who get the privilege of paddling from Moloka'i to O'ahu.

Ya' know, when we decided to open up this here bloggie a little over five months ago, we had no idea how it would fare against posting a more conventional website instead. We knew we were bucking the trend big time, but websites take a lot of work to keep them vital and relevant. We took it to the LORD in prayer. GOD answers all prayers, and our club's first canoeblog was launched!

Well paddling fans, and unless the counter is acting funky, we are closing in on 10,000 hits! It seemed that as the paddling season progressed, it picked up more, and more steam. Kinda' like a runaway train, or that warm and fuzzy feeling you get when everyone is blending and hitting the water at the same time. Chicken skin no?

We've seen some pretty cool websites in our day, but wethinks it's mostly about freshness and timeliness these 21st century days, which is where a website falls short vs. blogging.

To the scores of people who worked tirelessly all season long to make our club's 5th anniversary an extra special one, Udabest'!

Mahalos to all of you peeps who kept blogbacking to read and see George, Maria, pailona, and Uncle Hut's ponderings and photos, come back for more soon partner, we'll be sure to keep the lights on for ya'...

A big mahalo to Coach Clay for trailering the Aloha to Brent Bixler's Canoe Repair Shop in Waimanalo, and to Jorge, Ed, and Lono for helping to lighten the load. The Aloha will be ready for pick-up on Thursday, likely in the morning, although we don't know for sure just yet. Just got off the phone with Coach Clayton, and he requests that paddlers who are available to help carry canoe meet tomorrow morning (7-17/Tuesday) at the Waimanalo Jack-In-The Box at 9:30 AM (sharp).

• 9:15 - 9:30 AM: Meet in the parking lot adjacent to the Waimanalo Jack-In-The-Box.
• 9:30: Coach Clay arrives, we saddle up and convoy to nearby Brent Bixler's, and carry the Aloha into his canoe repair shop.

For those of you who have never had the pleasure, it's a lot of fun to see canoes in various stages of being built and/or repaired.

Before leaving for Oregon today, Charlie and Kathy asked us to let you know that there will be a special memorial presentation in honor of our brother Michael Tongg before the start of this Sunday's O.H.C.A. Championship Races at Ke'ehi Lagoon. We are all encouraged to turn out en masse to celebrate the life of this incredible gentleman. The commemorative t-shirt which is sold every year at the O.H.C.R.A. Championship Races will also have a special tribute to Mike printed on it. Memorial services will be held during the weekend of August 11-12 (more information to follow as it becomes available).
