02:17:26

This morning, at about 7:17:26 AM HST, I was still fast asleep.

At the same time, Ambesse Tolossa from Ethiopia crossed the finish line and came in first place in this year's Honolulu Marathon, clocking a time of 02:17:26.

Wowie.

If you've never had a chance to see these world class marathon runners compete, it is something you will never ever forget. They are swift, oh so quiet, as if breezing by, wings it seems attached to their feet.

Spellbinding, jaw dropping.

I've also received word from cousin Boris that George Hom and Rhonda Suzuki both successfully completed today's marathon too. Congratulations!

We know that there may be others in our canoe club who finished today's 26.2 too, so please feel free to add their names to the comments which follows this posting.

To all of today's finishers from here and abroad, you did it!

Aloha,

-Uncle Hut

"Welcome Halau Lokahi Paddling Team!"

On Tuesday, November 13th, New Hope Canoe Club officially welcomed the newest O'ahu Interscholastic Association paddling team to our Sand Island paddling site.

Head Coach Margaret Bush, and the young men and women from "Halau Lokahi" (a public charter school) have been training hard outside of the canoe, and are eagerly looking forward to paddling practice in preparation for their very first regatta on Saturday, January 12th, at Ke'ehi Lagoon.

Newly planted grass, newly planted canoe club.

The grass is certainly greener where it is watered and cared for.

Best Wishes Halau Lokahi Padding Team!

"Thank You From Donna Kahakui"

Aloha and mahalo nui to Laurie, Arlene, Scottie, Kehau, Kimo, Charlie and everyone from New Hope who truly made a difference for this island and the residents on this day! I cannot express in words the gratitude and appreciation I have for everyone there..people said when we began that it couldn't be done--but with the support of many groups and many hands especially those of New Hope's we were able to be successful all summer long and this project was by far the best-amazing support and great effort by Laurie and her gang--once again, please know how thankful we all are for this day and please let me know if there is anything I can do to help your group or if you are interested in doing this again sometime next year...mahalo nui, me ka ha;a ha;a, aloha, Donna Kahakui

"Single Moms Ministry Meeting on October 21"

The Single Moms Ministry will be meeting on Sunday, October 21st from 2-3:30 p.m. at the Ministry Center in the Hawaii Room featuring guest speaker, Psychologist Dr. Jan Tanner. The afternoon will have worship, great fellowship, and share with each other their stories. Some of the single moms will then share their testimonies to help others who may have the same struggles.

The mission of the Single Moms Ministry is to help single moms discover how valuable they are to Jesus, their children and the church. It is also their vision to provide a relationship based ministry, helping single moms develop friendships with other women to gain emotional and prayer support while encouraging and equipping them to fulfill their God-given assignment.

Sherry Hutchison is overseeing the Single Moms Ministry under Susie Lam, the Director of Women’s Ministries. Sherry has a heart for single moms drawing on her own experience as a single mom for 21 years. Sherry lived in the Midwest, and her five children ranged in age from 9 years to 16 years when she became a single mom. Working full time to support them, she still made time to attend her children’s school and sports activities. When her children were in High School they each took turns preparing dinner one night a week. Sherry taught all of her children to do their own laundry and household chores, and even now, her boys still do their own laundry, even the ones who are married! Every mom could learn a few things from Sherry's past experiences. Sherry has always had a passion for photography and through the years, she has made albums for each of her children. At family gatherings, these albums are displayed and lots of laughs are shared over the many memories commemorated in those photos.

If you are a single mom, be sure to check out the Single Moms Ministry.

"Hale'iwa Blue"

"Desi I" came in fifth place of eighteen canoes in their division today at the "Blue Makua Long Distance Race" at beautiful Hale'iwa Beach Park.

A contingent of three NHCC cheerleaders travelled out to the North Shore to whoop it up, as Charmaine and Audra along with their tough crew paddled hard to the finish line.

Another cheerleader and myself cooled off at nearby's Aoki's Shave Ice Stand aftah' the race was pau.

Was ono-licious!
