"Sewage Spill Health Tips From NHCC Paddler Dr. Jon"
Re: sewage spill and minimizing risk to our paddlers my thoughts are as follows. If the contamination level is still an issue and the warning signs are there:
- No one should go in the water with open cuts/broken skin
- No one should go in the water who is feeling ill for any reason already
- As we did Tue., paddle straight out through the gap into the open ocean and do the work out there; do ‘warm up’ level paddling going out and ‘cool down’ coming back as you approach the site to minimize splashing
- Everyone should shower off with antibiotic soap ASAP, preferably at the site, or as soon as they get home, and if there is any question about contamination of their shirts/paddling shorts those should be washed separately and promptly.
- Watch for any signs of skin infection or irritation, and promptly seek medical attention if something develops
- Observe for signs of GI symptoms or eye irritation etc.; splashing can spread contaminated droplets to eyes, lips, nose etc. with potential for local or systemic exposure.
- And even more basic, as it was Tue., paddling from the site should be presented fairly as a personal decision, where each individual weighs his own risk factors and considerations, without “penalty” if they decide not to participate.

"New Hope Canoe Club Ups Crew Count To Six!"
Our 40 Women's Crew (Lane 14) was given the nod late yesterday afternoon, and will be competing in this Saturday's State Championship Races at Ke'ehi Lagoon Beach Park.
Best wishes to our "Supah' Six!"
Don't forget to visit the NHCC Food Booth where mouth-watering pizza, yummy cotton candy, and cold and refreshing shave ice will be served aplenty.

Below is some key information for you to share with your clubs.
FRIDAY, AUGUST 1 at KE'EHI LAGOON
CLUB TENT SET-UP - 6:00 a.m. or later. Club tent space has been reserved for all clubs who submitted requests and spaces will be pre-marked along the Shoreline and the hill areas on either side of the Ke'ehi Lagoon Halau in the order that spaces were pulled. Those clubs who did not make a tent reservation will be able to put up tents starting at 6:00 a.m. in any area that is not pre-marked. Tent set-up will be monitored by Desi Ishii of Hui Wa'a and we appreciate everyone following Desi's instructions.
CANOE WEIGH-IN - 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Please make sure you have enough manpower. A parking pass for vehicles hauling trailers will be issued on Friday at weigh-in. Canoe weigh-in Questions? - contact George Waikoloa, Hui Wa'a Race Director at 554-7914.
COACHES MEETING - 5:00 p.m. Officials Pavilion. Every club must have a coach or club representative present at the meeting. All clubs participating in the Specials Event on Saturday, will pull for their lanes at the conclusion of the coaches meeting. Please contact Cindy Broc at 271-3264 if you would like to put in a specials crew. See attached invitation for details.
OFFICIALS MEETING - 6:00 p.m. Officials Pavilion. All Race Officials must be present at this meeting. Parking passes and Official T-Shirts will be distributed at this meeting. If your flight arrives after 6:00 p.m., please make arrangements to have another official from your association brief you on your responsibilities and sign for your pass and t-shirt.
HCRA MERCHANDISE SALES - 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. See attached price list. Merchandise will also be on sale on Saturday, August 2 starting at 7:00 a.m. located at the Merchandise Booth right in front of the Officials Pavilion. Sales will be stopped briefly during the HCRA State program beginning at approximately 8:00 a.m. NEW this year - Credit and Debit cards will be accepted!

Please notify all of your clubs that anyone with Hawaiian ancestry will be able to register and sign up for a Kau Inoa t-shirt. They should bring a copy of their birth certificate to confirm their Hawaiian ancestry. To make sure they have enough t-shirts on hand, if your club knows you will be registering people, please let us know how many you expect to register.

Let's mass at our koa canoe the Kai 'Elua with each of our crews before they shove off to the starting line, and cheer them on as they give it everything they've got for one last time this regatta season.
It'll be one fun day, and make sure to help out at our fundraiser food booth, check out the championship logo wear station (the design is epic), and embrace what has become our state's official sport- Hawaiian Outrigger Canoe Paddling!

"Just When You Thought You've Seen It All..."
For as long as I have known New Hope Canoe Club Head Coach Blane Gaison (former Atlanta Star QB, go Falcons!), I have never seen him eat anything remotely resembling junk food.
The man eats rabbit food out of see through plastic containers from home for goodness sake!
I was dumbfounded when I saw him holding a bowl of strawberry short cake, topped with a 3 to 5 second burst of whipped cream!
Take a deep breath sports fans, strawberries are good for you.
Blane's only comment when I asked him if I could photo document this rare event for all perpetuity was "I'm really hungry, I'm going to eat this."
In all fairness to Blane, he did try to stop a paddler from putting more whipped cream atop his already generous sugary white mountain of mouth watering sugar right after I took the above pic. Steely determination personified.
There is a kicker to all of this my friends.
Coach Blane paddled in the second to the last race of the day, the sun had come out, dried up all he rain, and his 40 Mix crew paddled out and to an incredible second place finish, the best finish we've had all season long. It also moved our club up a notch in the day's final tally.

Coincidence?
I think not!
Give who ever brought that delightful dessert and whipped cream a Beijing Bling of a gold medal!

P.S. Did you hear about the paddler parking lot monitors who caught a perp in the parking lot with bad intentions? They alerted the HPD special duty police officer nearby, and the dude was promptly taken into custody on outstanding warrants. Let's keep this gentleman in our prayers, that he might come to know our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.
It was a "Winnie The Pooh" kind of day, with a little bit of huny added in for good measure.
You'll not want to miss a great sequel when our NHCC qualifying crews compete against the best of the best from around the state at the grand finale on Saturday (HCRA State Championship Races), August 2nd, at Ke'ehi Lagoon!

It's rainy and windy here today at the O'ahu Hawaiian Canoe Racing Association Championship Races at Ke'ehi Lagoon.
But the action is still great!
Congratulations to our Novice B Wahine and our Novice A Kane who have steadily gotten better and stronger with each passing regatta. Both crews came in 4th place today, for two big points in the AA Division.

"Our Newest Paddler"
Hello Everyone,
My name is Morgan Mae Chang, and I was born on May 29, 2008, at 4:11 am.
Daddy said I weighed in at 7 lbs., 9.8 oz., and measured 20 1/4 inches. He said I would be a perfect fit for seat one. What is a seat one anyway?

"Protect The Aloha"
The Aloha returned to the beach last week.
It had been in the shop for repairs and a special paint design just in time for the Walter J. MacFarlane 4th of July Regatta this coming Friday.
The Aloha was badly damaged at last year's MacFarlane, repaired, and damaged again during spring practice.
For some reason, and because no two canoes are exactly the same, the Aloha is one of our very favorite open-ocean racers.
Please help to take good care of the Aloha this coming 4th. While it may be easier to slide her up and down the beach, it's like sandpaper, and the rocks will cut into the bottom of the hull. Avoid collisions, a race won is not worth the injury and/or damage to person and/or property.
Malama our canoes well, and your children's childern's children will paddle in them for years to come.

"Bentos & Chicken"
If you haven't ordered your mouth-watering 4th of July paddling bento yet, please let Larry know as soon as possible. Trust the crew when we tell you, it's broke da' mout' gud'.
For Craig in Brooklyn, a bento is a most delicious prepared-to-go meal, a meat and fish feast on a bed of hot white rice, all wrapped up neatly in a transparent plastic container. Chopsticks optional.
After the kane practice tonight, Colin reported that the deadline for huli-huli chicken monies and unsold ticket turn-in is this Saturday. The huli-huli chicken company needs a firm count, and everyone's kokua would be greatly appreciated. Ticket sales have been brisk, and the smell of huli-huli chicken on a Sunday morning after church will soon beckon for those who buy now!

I had an epiphany yesterday.
It came at the end of the Junior Men race, as our kane released their seats to our Senior Women crew.
With lightning fast NASCAR like pit crew precision, the water ballet which ensued in a challenging shoreline wave break was a thing of beauty, a moment in time to cherish and remember forever and ever.
In the sounds of the sweet and salty water ballet which unfolded, in the midst of twenty or so New Hope canoe paddlers battling to make ready the Kai 'Elua for the next race, GOD's music of life filled the air and soared high above the majestic Waimanalo wonderful ridge line in the background.
Heaven on earth.

"Father's Day In Nanakuli"
While a tank of gas doesn't go very far these days, a father's love runs eternal.

Congratulations to our mighty Women Novice A (5:21.55) crew who fought through a tough windswept Kailua Beach course yesterday to a fantastic second place finish (3 points).
Our Women Open Four (6:31.83) crew never gave up, and their perseverance paid off in a fourth place finish (1 point) as we continue on the road to the state championships in August.
The majority of our crews finished in the all-important top 7 yesterday as well, which will likely equate to many crew invitations to canoe wave surf in 7 lanes, on the 4th of July, at Waikiki Beach!

"Kaihe Chong"
A few years ago, while covering the Molokai Relay which includes one-man canoes and surfski’s, racing across the Kaiwi channel, a surf ski paddled by a boy, no older than 14 or 15 years old, was up front with the best paddlers in the world.He was Kaihe Blaze Kaniela Chong, whom his family and friends call "Kai" -- Kaihe is Hawaiian for "always true to the mark "-- making reference to a spear. Watching him paddle, it was he lives by his namesake. His competitive spirit is recognizable as I noted his discipline, which he displayed by seemingly an easy time mastering the sport of kayaking, both in surfski and K-1 kayak.
It was amazing to watch this wonder kid competing with adult men and women- - - and he was up front with the leaders, too! It was truly awesome to watch him as he raced towards the Ala Moana finish line.
Today, the quiet and reserved Kamehameha School senior finished his final year in the Interscholastic League of Honolulu Kayak or K-1, and outrigger canoe paddling season.
Looking towards the future, Kai has committed his every waking hour to the kayak. He excels in both kayaking and outrigger canoe paddling as he begins another season with the Hui Nalu, a club where he is a long-time member. He belongs to the 18-year old crew, and favors the kayak which he trains for with an intense passion by himself and often, with his father.
Kai lives with his dad Dr. Blane Chong, a family and sports medicine physician, also Kai’s coach--a surfski and canoe paddler himself, his wife Kaili, and older brother B.J., presently with the Honolulu Police Department. He also has two younger brothers Kawelo and Kanai, and sister Tiani.
The Hawaii Kai teenager's intense training and sef-imposed discipline is focused on the future. He will be traveling to Oklahoma City soon for the U.S. Trials with Hawaii Senior competitors including Pat Dolan, Eric Abbot and Brandon Woods -- who will all be competing for a spot on the U.S. team at the Pan American Games.
Junior members include Kai, B. J. Campbell, and Ryan Dolan who will compete for a spot on the Olympic team at the Pan American Games. The Junior World Championships, and the training camp at the Olympic Training Center will be held this summer at Lake Placid, N. Y.
The top eight Juniors in the nation will qualify. (In November 2007, Kai, B. J. and Ryan were part of an elite group of the top nine juniors in the nation to qualify for a spot at the training center at San Diego, Ca.).
Kaihe is no slouch. His training regimen begins every morning at 4:30 a.m. and he is in the water by 5 a.m. -- the HCKT trains in the Ala Wai Canal. Then, he's off to school. If he is not paddling, he lifts weights, and trains until 6 p.m. And, there's homework, dinner, and off to bed by 9 p.m. -- no time to watch TV. because he's pretty much out "out" by 9 p.m. His routine repeats itself daily week-in and week-out! However, when the surf is good, he'll grab his board and surf! This is the life of a future Olympian!
Blaine Gaison, Kamehameha Schools Athletic Director, indicated that "Kaihe is a good kid and has Olympic potential. In Kai's junior year he finished first in the State's Championship; he qualified and went to the Olympic Training Center last year. However, he injured his shoulder, but, came back halfway through his senior year in kayaking, and not fully-recovered, he still took second in the state!"
The 18-year old graduates this June and will attend the University of Hawaii and follow his father Blaine's footsteps in the medical field, and Kai also wants a business degree, too.
Now as he prepares for high school graduation, he is also preparing for the Olympics as he competes for a place on the Olympic team at the Olympic Training Combine in San Diego. Here's his advice for those who may be want to duplicate what he is doing, "Don't give up, just keep on going, and try your best!"
Kai has a big future in kayaking, and also in the medical profession -- whether in a surf/ski or K-1, and, he has already set his sights on the 2012 Olympics in London!

Special recognition to our three crews (Women Novice A - 3rd Place / Women Open Four - 3rd Place/Mixed Masters 40's - Fourth Place) of wahine and kane paddlers who brought home five big club points toward our march to the State Championships on Saturday, August 2nd, at Ke'ehi Lagoon!
